Duets: Memories in a Digital World-series statement below
This body of work is fundamentally about dialogue—between past and present, analog and digital, the personal and the cultural. The gesture of placing two images in relation to one another creates what I think of as a visual "duet," where meaning emerges not only from each image on its own but from the tension, harmony, and dissonance between them. While the majority of the images in the Duets series are my own photographs, the project consciously incorporates the language of appropriation. Some images are sourced—fragments of visual culture from film, archives, the web. Their inclusion is not incidental but central to the project’s meditation on memory and authorship in a digital world. As artists, we’re always responding to what came before us; Duets simply makes that dialogue explicit. I get the concern about authorship, especially now, when images are everywhere. But appropriation has long been part of the conversation—from Warhol and Prince to Barbara Kruger and Carrie Mae Weems. I see Duets as part of that lineage—less about borrowing and more about reframing—inviting viewers to consider how meaning shifts when images are re-contextualized, paired, and placed in deliberate conversation.
