Oblique Strategies-series statement below
Jeffrey’s Oblique Strategies bridges the realms of photography and painting, drawing inspiration from the geometric abstraction of the 1960s and 70s while reflecting the enduring influence of Maynard Dixon’s painterly landscapes and Laura Gilpin’s 1930s photographic meditations on the American West. Digitally composed and then printed as singular, unrepeatable works on canvas, the series transforms photographic captures of painted textures, walls, and surfaces into vivid, abstract compositions that reimagine the natural world in bold, graphic terms. Grounded in a deep connection to Utah’s ancient landscapes, Oblique Strategies distills the artist’s impressions into luminous, impressionistic visions that emphasize form, energy, and the sublime. Like Dixon’s expansive vistas and Gilpin’s nuanced interplay of light and shadow, these works celebrate the monumental and the intimate, transcending representation to explore the elemental power of color, geometry, and painterly abstraction. Through this synthesis, Jeffrey blurs the boundaries between mediums, creating a dynamic tension that allows his work to both command space and harmonize within architectural contexts. By channeling the timeless spirit of the American landscape into contemporary abstraction, Oblique Strategies becomes a meditation on presence, transformation, and the enduring resonance of place. Oblique Strategies
With a nod to the America Color Field painters of the 1950's and 60's, these architectonic forms are built up from hundreds of digital captures of walls, fabric, and paint colour. The lines are hand drawn and then layered into the appropriate location to create balance and harmony.
